Rila National Park

Rila is the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula. The rocks that make up the age 250 million years. Rila is distinguished by its alpine landforms - circuses (indentations shaped lounge, open on one side), sharp peaks, ravines and rocky cliffs that were formed during the last glacial period, about 10,000 years.

The name Rila is derived from the Thracian "roula" meaning "much water" - it has over 200 lakes and numerous mineral springs - Separeva bath Kostenec and others. The highest lake was Glacial Lake - at 2715 meters the highest (212 acres) Smradlivoto lake and the deepest (37.5 m) is a lake eye of Seven Lakes. The lakes are found seaweed, shellfish, trout. Multiple streams give rise to three of the largest rivers in Bulgaria - Iskar, Maritsa and Mesta.

 

"Rila National Park" is the largest of the three national parks in Bulgaria and one of the largest protected areas in Europe. The park comprises the central and highest parts of the Rila Mountains, including Mount Musala. It was established in 1992 as a national park, and in 1999 was converted into a national part of it is separated and categorized in "Nature Park Rila Monastery"

 

National Park "Rila" is designed to protect the coniferous forests and grassland habitats of rare and endangered species, beautiful landscapes and historic sites of global importance for science and culture.

 

The park is located four reserves - Parangalitsa Central Rila Reserve, Ibar and Skakavitsa.

National Park "Rila" and next to it there are many monuments of national importance - churches, castles and ruins of ancient cities and roads. Near the territory of the park is the Rila Monastery - national historical and architectural reserve and fortress tower in Rila Monastery, which is an architectural monument. At the foot of the park is located the town of Samokov, which occurred Samokov School of Painting, created by Zachary Zograph.
